Canvas, Charter, RXNT & 88 percent incidents involving autonomous agents
Across just a few weeks in May 2026, several major data breaches exposed personal identifying information (PII) of users in academia, enterprise, and government. Learning management system platform provider Canvas experienced a ransomware attack that affected 9,000 universities and colleges. Remarkably, Canvas publicly announced that it paid the ransom on the data and that it had been destroyed by cybercriminals.
Elsewhere, telecom and mass media provider Charter Communications reported a breach exposed records for up to 40 million consumer and business customers. Meanwhile, a new survey from AI agent management platform provider Gravitee found that security executives across telecom, finance, manufacturing, healthcare, and logistics report 88 percent confirmed or suspected attacks involving autonomous AI agents.
