The National Association for Veterans Rights (NAVR) today announced the launch of a new documentary-style campaign, The Right to Choose: Veterans Helping Veterans, debuting May 4 in recognition of Military Appreciation Month.
The campaign features a series of short films capturing the real-life experiences of Veterans navigating the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) disability claims process, and the role access to support can play in outcomes.
While the VA has made meaningful progress in reducing its claims backlog, many Veterans still face a complex and often difficult system. For some, navigating the process can take months or even years without clear guidance.
The films center on four Veterans, Andrade Lamb, Jon Leon Guerrero, Kenneth Robinson, and Myra de Ala, who each experienced challenges navigating the claims process firsthand. Today, they help other Veterans better understand and move through that same system.
“These are real stories that reflect what happens when Veterans don’t have the support they need, and what’s possible when they do,” said Peter O’Rourke. President of NAVR. “As policies evolve across the country, we must ensure Veterans don’t lose access to trusted guidance or the ability to choose how they seek help.”
The campaign comes at a time when several states are advancing legislation that affects how Veterans can access assistance with disability claims. In California, Senate Bill 694, set to take effect in 2027, will restrict access to independent Veteran coaching services.
For Veterans, these changes could mean fewer options when seeking guidance through the claims process. For the Veteran coaches featured in the films, and others like them, it means the potential loss of a mission built on helping fellow Veterans navigate a system they have lived through themselves.
The project was developed in partnership with NAVR Alliance member Just4Veterans Enterprise and produced on-site in California. As Military Appreciation Month begins, NAVR hopes the campaign will elevate awareness around the importance of access, transparency, and Veteran choice in the disability claims process.
